What Is BOTOX®?
BOTOX® is a type of neurotoxin injectable used in facial aesthetics (under the name BOTOX® Cosmetic) and for a number of medical purposes. It is made primarily of botulinum toxin, a substance that can be injected into the body to temporarily inhibit muscle contractions.* When administered properly, BOTOX® can both enhance the facial appearance and manage symptoms of various issues, not limited to temporomandibular disorder (TMD).
Our team at Designer Smiles proudly utilizes the very popular BOTOX® to achieve a plethora of our patients’ goals. We also offer Dysport®, which is similar in composition to BOTOX® Cosmetic and can effectively reduce wrinkles between the eyebrows. If you have questions about BOTOX®, we encourage you to schedule an initial consultation!
What Are the Potential Benefits of BOTOX®?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is widely recognized for its ability to temporarily reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by relaxing facial muscles. It is commonly used to address dynamic facial wrinkles (i.e., wrinkles caused by repetitive facial movements) and produce a younger, more refreshed aesthetic.
Meanwhile, BOTOX® can also treat temporomandibular disorder (TMD). This common condition affects the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), which connects the jawbone to the skull; when these joints are inflamed or impaired, moving the jaw normally can become needlessly difficult. BOTOX® can be injected into the lower face to reduce the discomfort often associated with TMD and relax overactive jaw muscles, making it easier for a patient to chew, eat, speak, and more.
How Is BOTOX® Administered?
BOTOX®, Dysport®, and other injectables (such as dermal fillers) usually involve a series of minimally invasive treatment sessions. During the BOTOX® or Dysport® procedure, which typically lasts no longer than 15 minutes, your provider will strategically inject the solution into your face with a thin, sterilized needle. While the injections are not usually considered painful, we can use a topical anesthetic if you so desire.
In general, the results of BOTOX® and Dysport® take a few days to become noticeable. For a comprehensive “medical spa” experience, you may wish to combine your BOTOX® treatment with PRF microneedling, another non-surgical option that can rejuvenate the facial aesthetic.

What Is Recovery Like After BOTOX® Injections?
No downtime is typically needed following a BOTOX® session. You will likely be able to return to your everyday activities (i.e., work) immediately after the treatment.
While major side effects are uncommon, patients sometimes report swelling, bruising, or a short-term headache; however, these symptoms are usually temporary and not cause for concern. Much less commonly, patients have reported weakness, breathing or motion problems, or bladder incontinence. If you notice any of these symptoms, we advise you to let our office know.
How Long Does BOTOX® Last?
The effects of BOTOX® are temporary, but generally last for around four months before a follow-up treatment is necessary. Keep in mind that the longevity of effects will depend on the treated area, dosage, and individual response to the formula. To maintain optimal results, we typically recommend regular sessions spaced a few months apart.
How Much Does BOTOX® Cost?
At Designer Smiles, BOTOX® injections generally range between $10 and $12 per unit, whereas pricing for Dysport® usually ranges from $5 to $8 per unit. Please be aware that the cost will depend on the other treatments incorporated, the number of sessions, and several additional factors.
While we accept a number of dental insurance plans, please note that insurance will not cover BOTOX® Cosmetic when it is employed for aesthetic purposes, and not every plan will cover BOTOX® injections for TMD. With this in mind, a member of our friendly team will gladly walk you through your benefits if you so desire. Please also feel free to see whether you qualify for payment plans through Lending Club or CareCredit®.
